Breaking Barriers

INTENT

Our Breaking Barriers curriculum aims to create rounded geographers, historians, engineers, scientists, creatives, and independent career managers. The Breaking Barriers curriculum goes beyond what is examinable and provides opportunities for pupils to experience quality teaching and learning in a range of subject areas, engage in fieldwork within their locality and apply creative skills and knowledge that extends beyond the classroom. Personal development lies at the heart of the Breaking Barriers curriculum where leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative and communication (LORIC) skills are intertwined with related AQA unit awards so that students can gain accreditation whilst learning outside of the classroom.

IMPLEMENTATION

Working as a 3-year, sequential, thematic programme, Breaking Barriers takes place one day per week and incorporates one or more of the LORIC principles and accompanying AQA Unit Awards so that students have clear intent to their experience and can aid their own personal development by achieving accreditation both with AQA and Pixl in form of the Pixl Edge programme.

IMPACT

The impact of Breaking Barriers is measured in a number of ways: Firstly through the certification and accreditations the students are able to gain as well as through PASS surveys which take place throughout the year and eventually NEET data to assess the impact of the personal development curriculum.
