INTENT
We deliver an ambitious, inclusive and accessible English curriculum that enables all pupils to thrive and achieve their full potential.
At KS3, students study both English Language and Literature, engaging with a broad range of carefully selected, challenging and relatable texts. This builds strong foundations in vocabulary, comprehension and writing structure, while guided reading, modelled writing and structured discussion ensure every student can access and enjoy the curriculum. Spoken language is prioritised to develop confidence, articulate expression and active listening.
At KS4, the focus shifts to English Language, with learning designed to meet the demands of the Functional Skills and GCSE specifications. Students develop precision in reading, analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively for a range of purposes and audiences. Writing tasks refine accuracy and creativity, while opportunities for formal and informal speaking enhance confidence and collaboration.
Our aim is that every pupil leaves KS4 with a recognised English qualification, equipped with the literacy, communication skills and resilience needed to succeed academically, professionally and in life beyond school.
IMPLEMENTATION
At KS3, students access three English lessons per week, with literacy development embedded across the curriculum and tutor time. The curriculum combines Language and Literature, using diverse, high-quality texts to inspire a love of reading while building vocabulary, comprehension and writing accuracy. Guided reading, modelled writing and structured discussion ensure all students can engage with ambitious material, while speaking and listening activities grow confidence and fluency. Targeted interventions and regular assessment provide personalised support, enabling every student to make strong progress.
At KS4, students receive three to four lessons per week, balancing GCSE and Functional Skills content according to need. Lessons become increasingly focused as students move through Pathway 10 or Pathway 7, ensuring the right level of stretch and support. Teaching develops critical reading, precise and purposeful writing and confident communication skills, fully preparing pupils for exams and for life beyond school.
Across both key stages, assessment informs teaching, adaptive teaching removes barriers and high expectations drive ambition. This approach ensures that every student leaves with the confidence and resilience to thrive in further education, employment and beyond.
IMPACT
As students progress through Invested, they become confident, capable communicators, fully prepared for exams and future pathways. They read critically, write accurately and creatively and express ideas clearly in a range of contexts.
Regular assessment and tailored support ensure measurable progress for all students, closing literacy gaps and building resilience. Students engage with diverse texts, gaining cultural capital and transferable skills that prepare them for further study and employment.
For those needing additional support, targeted interventions significantly improve reading, writing and verbal confidence, enabling better access to the wider curriculum.
Beyond academic success, the curriculum fosters a love of reading, pride in self-expression, and ambition, ensuring every student achieves a recognised English qualification and is equipped to thrive beyond the classroom.
